Any clue why even some old school watchmakers have stopped producing mechanical timepieces? Mechanicals are the cornerstone of this industry and have been in production for nearly 200 years, yet even makers like Baume Et Mercier decided to put their efforts only toward Quartz movements as of the early 1980's, while other makers like Audemars Piguet watches continue their quest to perfect and refine mechanical watches.
Audemars Piguet is responsible for creating the thinnest chronograph and also the first to introduce the skeleton watch. All of their pieces are still manufactured in the old fashioned, handmade way…making them one of an elite group of watchmakers which is dwindling in numbers.
The fascination with mechanicals seems to be fading, as well. Although many of these models are sold each year, far more quartz watches make their way onto the wrists of the consumer. Why is this? Well, there are several factors that are playing a role in the demise of the mechanical movement;
• Mechanical watches are very expensive to manufacturer. They cost more, simply because they require many more components and are usually put together, at least in part, by hand. Mechanical movements are delicate and precise instruments and must be crafted by highly skilled watchmakers. These artisans don't come cheap and neither do their watches. The technique used to make a mechanical movement is passed down to generations and every watch is a masterpiece in engineering.
• Because they cost more to manufacturer, they cost more to the consumer. Many of us just don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a luxury timepiece and will often opt for the less expensive quartz models. Even though a mechanical watch will last in some cases for a lifetime…most of us still can't afford the added expense of owning one, so it makes sense that the makers would accommodate us by offering more selection of quartz watches.
• Mechanicals require much more maintenance. We are busy and don't have the time needed to properly clean, store, and maintain these luxury wristwatches. Many of these models require daily hand winding and even if you own a self winding version…you must wear the piece every day in order for it to wind.
Mechanicals are being produced on a much smaller scale that ever before, but for some of us they are still intriguing and special…even worth the extra expense and attention.
