How many watches do you own? Unless you are a watch connoisseur, or collector you probably only have one or maybe two in your possession. Timepieces are objects that most of us don’t consider replacing until the one we own stops ticking, right? Well, if you are in the market for a new watch, you have a lot of factors worth considering…one is certainly the movement. A watch’s movement is the central element that will keep it working for you for as long or short a time as you like. That is the reason you can buy a cheap dime store watch with a movement made in China that might stop keeping time before you leave the store or end up with a high quality Movado that you can pass on to your son. These days, even Quartz models last an incredibly long time although no watch movement will outlast a well-made mechanical one. Let’s look at the pros and cons and offer up some information that you might not have had before, so that you can make the right choice for you:

Mechanical movements; these timepieces are originals. They have been crafted in the same fashion for almost 200 years. They are put together with loads of components and much of the work is done by hand…this is where the steep price tag comes in. Mechanicals are almost always higher in price than quartz watches. With price, in most cases comes high quality, as well. Take Movado, for example. They are known for their affordable Swiss quartz models, but a few years back they introduced a line of mechanicals that rivaled any on the market. If you remember, Movado was first made famous for their meticulously crafted pocket watches, some of which are still around and still keeping time accurately. The extra money you pay for a mechanical timepiece makes up for itself in the time you get to enjoy the piece.

Quartz watches, on the other hand are also incredibly well made and last a long time. They are not timeless, but Quartz technology has come a long way and these wristwatches will generally keep time for many years. They require very little maintenance and because of their quartz movement, they cost less.

Now that you have a few more facts, the choice is yours…a marvelous mechanical or a splendid Swiss Quartz.
