Timekeeping has come light-years since the beginning of watchmaking. The first timepieces were rather large and bulky. They definitely made their presence known and were described as being somewhat cumbersome. Although, wristwatches have evolved in size tremendously because of innovative efforts of some amazing watchmakers…there still are areas where growth is apparent. The creative teams at companies like Tissot have been responsible for changing the face of time, in a sense. Tissot watches are one of the companies that produce touch screen timepieces. Now, it's not that touch screen technology is all that fascinating, but utilizing it in the tiny confounds of a watch, is. Tissot's T-Touch technology was revolutionary when it was introduced, but touch screen technologies have been around quite a long time. Have you ever wondered how touch screens work? Are you curious about how the watch knows where your finger is pressing? I was, so this article was born.

To start off, there are 3 basic ways that a touch screen can operate:

1. Capacitive system; in this way a layer of electrical charge is placed under the screen and stored there. When a person presses in that area a bit of that charge is transferred to the instrument. At this time, the charge that is held is depleted a little. The capacitive system offers a clearer and brighter display than the other types.

2. Resistive system; this way uses a metallic layer on both sides of the glass. The two layers are help apart by spacers and the watch crystal is placed on top of it all. The electrical current runs through the layers and when the screen is touched the layers meet at that exact spot.

3. Surface acoustic wave uses two transducers. One that receives and one that sends the messages. There are no metallic layers and the screen can receive a signal at any time.

The benefits of a touch screen watch are obviously convenience and ease of use. Touch screen watches are also quite bright and user friendly. If you haven't seen any of the touch screen timepieces available, it might be time you checked them out. Tissot, along with a few other Swiss quality makers offer touch screen technology in their watches. You never know…you might become a convert.
