No matter what you spent on your watch, giving it the proper care and attention will help it to last longer. In addition to having a timepiece look good, you want it to keep accurate time and the best way to ensure that both factors are in place is to keep you wristwatch clean. Of course, it is best to have your piece cleaned by a professional every few years, but in the meantime there is a lot that you can do on your own. So, whether you own a Movado quartz model or a mechanical movement from Breitling remember that you can keep your timepiece ticking smoothly with a few simple tips;

Cleaning

First, you must know the type of watch you own. If you have a water resistant model, determine what the water resistance level is and adhere to those standards. Remember that if your timepiece doesn't say clearly what the water resistance is…you would be wise to keep it very dry. Cleaning a piece like this will require a toothpick to dislodge and particles from the casing and bracelet and a soft (lint free) cloth for polishing. A water resistant model can be cleaned with warm, soapy water and a cloth. Metal bracelets should always be polished with a soft cloth or a jeweler's cloth. Leather straps can be cleaned with saddle soap. Never use any harsh chemicals on any part of your timepiece.

Caring for the Crystal

The crystal is what covers the face and protects the watch. It is important to remember that although you may have a scratch resistant crystal, no crystal is scratch proof. You can prevent scratches by only polishing with a soft cloth and no chemicals. You can also avoid scratches by taking off your watch when you are working in the yard. If you do happen to get a scratch, have it buffed out if possible or replace it.

Storing

Many of us forget to properly store our timepieces. Simply taking it off and dropping it on the dresser is not sufficient. Neither is storing in a jewelry box. Timepieces should be stores in a watch box or cabinet. These are specially designed to protect the movement, as well as the outer casing. A box will cushion your piece and keep it from scratches. A proper cabinet will also provide a dry, dust free environment for your collection.

Keep your timepieces ticking with these easy to follow tips.
